Nipah again?

KOZHIKODE: In Kozhikode, the post-mortem sample of the 18-year-old girl has tested preliminarily positive. There is suspicion that the girl who suffered brain death in Kozhikode was infected with Nipah. The preliminary test confirmed Nipah in the Mankada, Malappuram native, whose postmortem was conducted at the Medical College Hospital. The sample has been sent to the virology lab in Pune for confirmation. The 18-year-old died this month, on the 1st, at a private hospital in Kozhikode. When she arrived in Kozhikode, she was in a state of brain death.

In preliminary testing conducted yesterday at the Kozhikode Medical College virology lab, Nipah was confirmed in a 38‑year‑old woman from Thachanattukara, Palakkad.The patient, who is critically ill, is on a ventilator at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna. The patient’s sample has been sent to the virology lab in Pune for testing. The result is expected on Friday. It is not clear where the young woman contracted the infection. Health department officials are monitoring all those on the contact list for 10 days.
